چکیده

Volcanic hazard assessment is of paramount importance for the safeguard of the resources exposed to volcanic hazards. In the paper we present ELFM, a lava flow simulation model for the evaluation of the lava flow hazard on Mount Etna (Sicily, Italy), the most important active volcano in Europe. The major contributions of the paper are: (a) a detailed specification of the lava flow simulation model and the specification of an algorithm implementing it; (b) the definition of a methodological framework for applying the model to the specific volcano. For what concerns the former issue, we propose an extended version of an existing stochastic model that has been applied so far only to the assessment of the volcanic hazard on Lanzarote and Tenerife (Canary Islands). Concerning the methodological framework, we claim model validation is definitely needed for assessing the effectiveness of the lava flow simulation model. To that extent a strategy has been devised for the generation of simulation experiments and evaluation of their outcomes. r 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Lava flow hazards at Mount Etna: constraints imposed by eruptive history and numerical simulations

Improving lava flow hazard assessment is one of the most important and challenging fields of volcanology, and has an immediate and practical impact on society. Here, we present a methodology for the quantitative assessment of lava flow hazards based on a combination of field data, numerical simulations and probability analyses. With the extensive data available on historic eruptions of Mt. Etna...

A Cellular Automata Methodology for Evaluating Lava Flow Hazard at Mount Etna (italy)

Different worldwide volcanic areas are densely populated and urbanized. For instance, in Italy, despite being the most active volcano in Europe, Mt Etna is home to approximately one million people. During the last decades, the vulnerability of the Etnean area has increased exponentially due to continued, at times wild, urbanization, with the consequence that new eruptions may involve even great...

Lava Flow Simulation with Cellular Automata: Applications for Civil Defense and Land Use Planning

The determination of areas exposed to new eruptive events in volcanic regions is crucial for diminishing consequences in terms of human causalities and damages of material properties. In this paper, we illustrate a methodology for defining flexible high-detailed lava invasion hazard maps which is based on an robust and efficient Cellular Automata model for simulating lava flows. We also present...

Lava flows impact prediction at Mount Etna by Cellular Automata

Millions of people live either on or in the surrounding areas of about six hundred worldwide volcanoes, which are known to be capable of renewed activity. The individuation of those areas that are more likely to be interested by new events is of fundamental relevance for mitigating possible consequences, both in terms of loss of human lives and material properties. Here we show a new methodolog...

Volcanic conduit migration over a basement landslide at Mount Etna (Italy)

The flanks of volcanoes may slide in response to the loading of the edifice on a weak basement, magma push, and/or to tectonic stress. However, examples of stratovolcanoes emplaced on active landslides are lacking and the possible effects on the volcano dynamics unknown. Here, we use aeromagnetic data to construct a three-dimensional model of the clay-rich basement of Etna volcano (Italy). We p...
